Description:

For all ages and experience levels, we'll post photos of bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, moths, beetles and other pollinators we find on our Butterfly Walks on Instagram, Facebook and iNaturalist.

The Texas Pollinator BioBlitz runs from Oct. 4 through Oct. 20, 2019.

Pollinators (butterflies, bees and moths, bats, hummingbirds, wasps, flies, and beetles) sustain native plant species, human food crops, and even crops for livestock.

Let's encourage planting of native, nectar-producing plants and pollinator gardens in communities, schools and backyards across Texas!

  • Pollinator BioBlitz participants observe and identify pollinators between Oct. 4-20, 2019
  • All ages and abilities are encouraged to find pollinators and nectar-producing plants.
  • Share observations by posting a photo or video to Instagram, iNaturalist, or Facebook. Or send your Estero observations to us (john.yochum@tpwd.texas.gov), and we'll post for you!

Daily observation challenges will add to the fun.

No tools are really required, although binoculars, a camera (smart phones are great!), and access to the web will make the experience more meaningful.

We always have a Butterfly Walk every Friday at 1:30 p.m. anyway, but this special Pollinator BioBlitz will help bring attention to the role and habitat needs of the Monarch butterfly and all of our other pollinator species. The Monarch population has dropped 80% over the past 20 years!  Our other pollinators (including bees!) also seem to be in trouble-- in fact 30 others are designated as Species of Greatest Conservation Need by Texas Parks and Wildlife. These creatures sustain native plant species, human food crops, and even crops for livestock. Although we in Weslaco see few Monarchs because of our location  (it is very unlikely we will see one), our goals are to increase awareness of all pollinators and encourage planting of native, nectar-producing plants and pollinator gardens in communities, schools and backyards across Texas!

Meet us on the Deck just outside the Park Store at the Visitor's Center at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 12 - we'll see somewhere between 20 and 50 different species of butterflies!  There is no cost to participate except for park entry ($5 for adults, free for children 12-and-under, and of course Park Passes).
