  Intro to Poi Class
Description:

Poi is a term used to describe a performance art and the equipment used to perform the art. It originated with the Maori people of New Zealand. The art involves swinging tethered weights in a variety of rhythmical and geometrical patterns. Poi can be made from different materials, handles, weights, and effects (such as LED lights).

Poi is considered a rhythmic and active music therapy which has a multitude of physical, mental, and emotional benefits likened to other musical therapies such as drumming. Some health benefits of poi include, a stronger hand grip, a better sense of balance, a better memory, and a longer attention span. In a study done on over 79 adults over the age of 60, it was shown to have positive physical and cognitive benefits pertaining to strength, stability, coordination, symmetry, and balance. Poi is playful by nature. It has been proven that play is vital in keeping the mind and body young by presenting novel situations that foster cognitive innovation, adaptability, and flexibility which in turn improves reflexes, memory, and processing speed. Poi is highly customizable, activates the right and left sides of the body and brain, and most importantly, is FUN!

This program is provided free of charge. Groups of 10 or more are asked to schedule a custom program. Site admission is $1 per person suggested donation.
